Twelfth Night Props Design
Role
My role within this project was to source, design, and build props that fit the needs of the director, the science fiction theme, and work cohesively with other designers.
Problem
This production takes place in a science fiction world. This created a unique challenge in that practically every item had to be made or altered to fit in with the world created by the director, actors, and designers while maintaining necessary functionality.
Audience
The actors using the props, the audience consisting mainly of college students and family of the performers who will be sitting farther away from the actors actively using the props
Strategy
I researched various science fiction worlds to better understand the scope of the genre and how these worlds fit into the world of Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare then collaborated with the production team. .
To create a cohesive whole, I worked mainly with the director and scenic and costume designers to fit the props into the environment of this fictional world.
After initial prototyping designs, I worked with actors and the director to ensure that the stylized look of them would not impede its functional use then altered designs based on their feedback.
Final Product
Majority of the props were altered ready made objects using materials used in costume and scenic design. This helped with the functionality of specific props while keeping them in the world of the play. The remaining props were designed and constructed.
